Harold L. Bachelder (1928 - 2013)
Harold L. Bachelder, died on November 4, 2013 from Parkinson's. He was born on March 13, 1928 in Cottage Grove, OR to Norman and Clara (Willis) Bachelder. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a weatherman, launching a world record for the highest weather balloon ever. He worked as a timber faller for Weyerhaeuser for 30 years and for Woodard Lumber Company for 7 years, retiring in 1985. Harold loved traveling, spending time with family, hunting black tail deer, gold mining, and rock hounding. Harold was a Cub Scout Leader & Scout Master. He was a member of the Bohemia Mine Owners Association, Woodmen of the World (WOW), VFW Post 3473, NRA, Charter Member of The Knights of Columbus and founding member of the Best Dad Ever Club. Harold married Juanita (Stiff) Hayes on February 14, 1954 in Cottage Grove. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Juanita Bachelder; son Kenneth B. Bachelder (Tammie) of Cottage Grove, OR; son Steve M. Bachelder (Carol) of Springfield, OR; son, Mike Bachelder (Darla) of Glasgow, Scotland; daughter Barbara Munsell (David) of Cottage Grove; brother, Bernie Bachelder (Jan) of Bremerton, WA; brother-in-law, Austin Ourada, Aloha, OR; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Melvin Hockley SR
He was born April 14, 1935, in Junction City to Gordon and Catherine Falver Hockley. He and his wife, Juanita, were married May 9, 1959.
A high school graduate, he served in the Army from February 1958 to June 1961. He worked as a millwright. Mel was an active member in the Bohemia Mine Owners Association he loved teaching children and adults how to pan for gold he will be greatly missed!!
Survivors include his wife; a son, Melvin Jr.; a daughter, Alita Stair; three siblings, Carmalita Hockley Stair, William Stair and McKenzie Stair; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
July 9 2010-Kathleen Bernice “Kathy” Ralston Age 60-1949-2010
She was born Nov. 12, 1949, in Red Bluff, Calif., to Leland and Clara Rinesmith Hale. She married Louis “Jack” Ralston on Sept. 29, 1973, in Reno, Nev.
She worked as a caregiver for senior and disabled services and, from 1980 to 1986 was morning cook at the Village Green Restaurant in Cottage Grove.
Survivors include her husband; five sons, Terry of RidgeCrest, Calif., Richard of Drain, John of New York, Michael of Wasilla, Alaska, and Jeremy of Cottage Grove; a sister, Vicki Shue of Redding, Calif.; a brother, Robert Hale of Spokane; and six grandchildren.
October 25 2009-Ralph Andrew Pepiot-age 72-1937-2009
Ralph was an active member of the BMOA as the membership chair and was very knowledgeable about the mining district and its history, He was a part owner of the Christo-Countessa Mining Association living at the 10 mile marker on Sharps Creek along with his wife Nancy throughout the summers since 1987-2009. He enjoy hunting, exploring, mining and spending time with his family expecially the grand-kids. He showed many people how to mine along that stretch of creek, as he always loved to see smiles from folks faces as they seen the glitter of gold. He worked with the Forest Service and Blm along with State Forestry to enforce fire restrictions thoughout the Sharps Creek area , he had great respect for them as they did for him. He was a loving husband, father of eight children, 17 grand-children, and 7 great grandchildren. He will be remembered for those lives he touched throughout his life and the memories he gave to us.
